About the brand

Over 100 years ago, Weleda founders established a new vision of health and beauty based on the deep connection between nature and human beings. Building on this knowledge, Weleda has been developing certified natural skincare since 1921. Weleda products are NATRUE certified – 100% natural, organic and are free from GMOs, synthetic preservatives, fragrances or colours and raw materials derived from mineral oils and of course have not been tested on animals.

The Weleda brand was founded in 1921 by Rudolf Steiner, Dr Ita Wegman and Oskar Schmiedel, and is a leading manufacturer of natural, holistic and organic pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

In 1921, Schmiedal’s trial laboratory at the Goetheanum was merged with a chemistry company and was moved to new premises in Arlesheim. This marked the start of what became known as the Weleda company – however, the name wasn’t decided on until sometime between 1924 and 1933. The Weleda name was created by Rudolf Steiner and was based on the Germanic healer, Veleda. Its logo, which encompasses a staff and an Aesculapian snake, acts as a visual metaphor for the combination of holistic and anthroposophic medicine.
